Chendul Penang vs Cendol Melaka

Cendol Chendul

Cultural Influences Cendol Melaka

So cendol likely originated in Southeast Asia – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand. In the 15th-16th centuries in Melaka, it absorbed influences from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan cultures. That’s why Melaka cendol has such a unique flavor profile mixing together all those traditions.

The Origin Penang Chendul

The famous Penang chendul has been around since 1936. That’s when Tan Teik Fuang, a Teochew immigrant, first started selling it from a pushcart on a small alley off Penang Road. His stall became legendary for the dessert. So the origins of Penang chendul go all the way back to 1936 when that first stall was established.

Finely shaved ice coupled with thick delicious gula melaka, yummy! Really close to the melaka cendol I tasted previously when I was there. They serve a cup of water and surprisingly got some free fried kuehs along with the order! Nice, quiet place too.

Nice place to chill and have your fav chendol. My friend order the classic chendol which was thick with gula melaka sauce whilst mine was a chendol drink with some jelly. I like my drink better as it is less sweet and the jelly gave it some texture. Service by the staff was excellent. She brought us water and when my friend commented that the chendol was too sweet she gave us a bowl of shaved ice! Definitely a cut above the usual service!! Thank you for the extra mile. Definitely one of those places I would go again if I am in the hood!
